On 20 September 2017, the IEHG Service Improvement team hosted a masterclass entitled 'Clinicians Leading Change and Improvement' at the Catherine McAuley Centre on Eccles Street. The event was an opportunity to learn from the extensive experience of invited guest speaker Dr Paul DeChant and his achievements over the years in Lean process improvement, in particular addressing issues of burnout among Healthcare professionals.

Dr Colm Henry, National Clinical Lead for Acute Hospitals, presented on his personal leadership journey to date and lessons learned, while Mr Ken Mealy, National Co-Lead for the Acute Surgery Programme presented on the use of data to drive decision-making and improvement.

The programme for this Masterclass included insights into developing and supporting medical leadership in process change across multiple sites and organisations.

Key speaker:

Dr Paul De Chant is a physician executive with more than 25 years of clinical and management experience in all aspects of medical group governance, strategic planning, financial growth, acquisitions and Lean workflow redesign.

From 2009 to 2014, he served as CEO of Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, a not-for-profit healthcare organisation dedicated to providing the highest level of patient care. Under his tenure, through implementation of Lean process philosophy, the organisation’s more than 300 primary and speciality care physicians achieved significant improvement to quality of care efficiency and cost. Dr DeChant has also held leadership roles at Geisinger Health Systems and High Country Health Care.
